Darnell Pernell Bassett, known to family and friends as PJ, was called home on December 31, 2025, at the age of 31. Born on October 13, 1994; he was the cherished son of Pernell Johnson and the late Angela Bassett. PJ grew up in Washington, DC, and though he faced challenging times during his youth, he transformed his life through determination and support. He began working with Project Empowerment and later gained employment with Metro as a Transit Cleaner.
PJ was known for his playful spirit—he loved to joke, talk trash, and could argue his point with ease. Despite his fiery personality, he never held grudges and was guided by love. He deeply cherished his children, always making sure to spend his available time with them so they felt unconditional love and affection. PJ was fiercely protective of his nieces and the women in his family and took an active role in keeping his nephews and cousins on the right https://path.He often reassured loved ones by saying, “I am always one phone call away.” PJ’s loyalty extended strongly to his best friend and brother, Darrell (Rell). Their bond was unbreakable, and he would move mountains for him. Their relationship was always full of love and never a dull moment, especially during the phone calls they shared with their big sister Michelle.
Darnell was predeceased in death by his mother Angela Bassett; Brother Antonio Bassett; Grandmothers Georgia C. Johnson and Mildred Bassett; Grandfathers James Bassett and James Johnson; three cousins Michael Bassett (Block), Gregory Bassett, and Michael Bassett (Mike). He is lovingly remembered by his girlfriend Brittany Dixon; daughter Daniya Dixon; son Darnell Bassett Jr.; two bonus children, Reagan Dixon and Dmari Dixon; father Pernell Johnson; sisters Michelle, Jeannie, and Mikia Bassett; brother Darrell Bassett; Tyreese Johnson; Lil Pernell Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, family, and friends. PJ’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to family, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
