Dayna Hankins' Obituary
Dayna Hankins, lovingly known to many as “DD” and “Delicious,” departed this life peacefully on April 19, 2026. Born on August 12, 1986, at DC General Hospital in Washington, D.C., Dayna was a radiant light—a vibrant, dynamic, and deeply loving soul whose presence filled every room with laughter, beauty, and undeniable energy. Though her time with us was far too short, the impact she made will live on forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
Dayna received her formal education through the District of Columbia Public Schools before earning her GED, demonstrating her determination and resilience. She later pursued her passion at Dudley’s Cosmetology School, where she obtained her cosmetology license in 2010. From an early age, Dayna’s creativity was unmistakable. As a little girl, she could often be found experimenting with hairstyles using whatever she had on hand—tracks, shoelaces, and pure imagination—already showcasing the gift that would become her calling.
Her talent, flair, and eye for beauty made her a standout in her field. Dayna worked at Salon Hair Studio 50/50+ in Maryland, where she rose to the role of Assistant Manager, earning the respect and admiration of both colleagues and clients. When the pandemic shifted the world, Dayna adapted with grace and determination, continuing to serve her loyal clients from home, ensuring that everyone who sat in her chair not only looked beautiful but felt it too.
While Dayna was known as the stylist of the family, her true role was so much greater. She was the heartbeat of her loved ones—the glue that kept everyone connected. A natural leader and protector, Dayna carried herself like the queen she was, whether at the chessboard or in life. She was the one people called when they needed advice, a laugh, or simply a place to land. To her siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews, she was a confidante, a therapist, a sparring partner, and above all, a safe haven. Her home was more than just a place—it was a gathering space filled with warmth, music, laughter, and unconditional love.
Dayna embraced life boldly and without hesitation. She loved music deeply, especially the rhythm and culture of Go-Go, and nothing brought her more joy than hearing bands like Rare Essence and Backyard Band. When Dayna stepped out, it was guaranteed to be a good time—full of laughter, dancing, and unforgettable moments. She found joy in traveling, indulging in her love for crabs, shopping, and creating lasting memories with the people she cherished most.
Family was the center of Dayna’s world. Raised in a large, close-knit family, she shared bonds with her cousins that were as deep as those of siblings. Her love for her mother was immeasurable—a relationship rooted in friendship, trust, laughter, and countless shared experiences, including their love of travel. Dayna also shared a special and meaningful bond with her Aunt Renee, whom she cherished deeply. She showered her with the same love, affection, and attentiveness that her mother, Kimmy, so beautifully gave.
Dayna absolutely adored her nieces, nephew, and great-nieces—Keniyah, Nekiyah, Kevin (Nysha), Kaliyah, and Dyn’ver. She devoted countless hours to them, playing an active and loving role in helping to raise and nurture each of them. Her presence in their lives was constant, and her love for them was unwavering.
Dayna also shared a beautiful love story with her special friend, Kelvin—a relationship that began unexpectedly but blossomed into a bond defined by strength, humor, resilience, and enduring love.
Dayna was truly one of a kind—a free spirit with a bold personality, a sharp wit, and a heart full of love. She was a tough cookie with a tender center, fiercely loyal to those she loved and unapologetically herself in every way. She had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and valued, leaving a lasting imprint on every life she touched.
Though her physical presence is no longer with us, Dayna’s spirit lives on—in the laughter she inspired, the love she gave so freely, and the countless memories that will continue to bring comfort and joy. Her absence leaves a profound void, but her legacy of love, strength, and authenticity will forever remain.
To know Dayna was to love her—and to love her was to be changed for the better.
Dayna leaves to cherish her precious memory: her beloved brother, Keith “Rick Rick” Ricardo Hankins, Jr.; her loving sister, Robin Whittingham; her half-sister, Domicka Thomas; her bonus sister, Telesia; her step-sisters, Meishaun Tolliver and Kesha Brown; her father, Nathaniel Thomas; and her cherished nieces and nephews, Keniyah, Nekiyah, Kevin, Cheyenne, Kaliyah, and Dyn’ver; as well as her devoted and special friend, Kelvin Brevard.
