Geraldine Teresa Mitchell

Geraldine Teresa Mitchell transitioned peacefully in her home the morning of February 3, 2025, with the love of her family surrounding her. Geraldine was born on October 8, 1929, in Washington, DC, to the late Thomas and Mary Chambers. She was the oldest of 14 siblings and the last of her brothers and sisters to be called home. She was preceded in death by her late husband Richard Mitchell Sr., son Michael P. Mitchell, and granddaughter, London Mitchell. She has now reunited with them in peace. Her legacy lives on through the family that she has built, the love she gave, and the countless lives that she has touched. Geraldine was a woman of unmatched strength, love, and determination. As the matriarch of the family, she held everything together with constant support and guidance. She was stubborn in the best way, never backing down from what she believed in, and always standing firm in her beliefs. She didn’t take anything from anyone. What she said went. Beyond that tough exterior, she had a heart full of love and care for her family. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, but it was always clear that she had a deep love for those around her. Geraldine had a way of making people laugh with her unique sense of humor. She was tough as nails, but her kindness and laughter was just as strong. Her love, strength, and humor will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Geraldine graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, DC in 1950. She became a licensed practical nurse in 1964 and began her nursing career at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital the same year. In 1969 she was employed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where she worked as a Gastroenterology technician in the Federal Government, and later took on other employment opportunities at The Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home in Washington, DC. Her dedication and skill were recognized and in 1989 she was promoted to a higher grade in the Federal Government and went on to The United States Soldiers and Airmen’s Home in Washington, DC. By 1992, she was given primary responsibility for the special care unit, where she did remarkable work. Her leadership and care made a profound impact, and she was widely regarded as the heart of the unit, often credited for its success. Geraldine was known as an incredible lady who cared deeply for the members of the unit. She retired in 1995 leaving behind a legacy of compassion and excellence. Geraldine leaves behind a family that will always hold her close. She was the foundation, the one that made sure her loved ones were cared for and supported. Her daughter: Jocelyn Mitchell; (2) sons: Richard and David Mitchell; (8)grandchildren: TaKesha Mitchell, Nickiea Youmans (husband, Linzy Youmans), Rashad Kenner, Shanday Travis, Sean Mitchell Mitchell, David Mitchell Jr., and Amanda Mitchell; (9) great grandchildren: Djuante’ Mitchell, Imani Ingram, Kimaun Mitchell, Isayhia Mitchell, Kirstin Ingram, Aniya Mitchell, Immanuel Ingram, Aubrey Tilghman, and Deshawn Tilghman; (3) great great grandchildren: Jay’ceon Mitchell, Kourtez Mitchell, and Kenndyl Mitchell; (2) nieces: Kimberly Pinkney, and Toni Holloway and a host of other loving family and friends.
